The Best Business Skill (part 1)
January 20, 2012
The Best business skill according to experts is the “Ability to SELL.” If your company can’t sell, then you won’t have a business.
When I do talks on entrepreneurship, I always ask the crowd if they like sales. Only a few hands will be raised. The rest are allergic to selling. This is a skill that is not innate for the majority. But a skill that can and should be learned if you want to be successful in business and in life.
In the Book The Millionaire Next Door, authors Thomas Stanley & William Danko conducted a survey of the Real Millionaires in America. That means they have a net worth of more than a million dollars. The fake ones are those who may have all the toys that make them look successful but in reality are broke. Remember, “There’s a big difference between Looking Successful and Being Successful!”
They came up with 20 Traits to which they attribute their success. The First and second are tied…Being Honest and Well Disciplined The third one is Getting Along with people, in other words, People Skills. Here is where the ability to sell comes to play. Sales is the best way to enhance people skills.
By the way, you won’t believe the fourth trait…having a Supportive Spouse. So if you don’t get along with your spouse, chances are, you won’t become a millionaire. Even if the two of you are not ok, go ahead and tell your partner how much you love him/her. If your having a hard time, just think of all the money you’re losing because your not getting along. You’ll be motivated after that.
